Tycho’s career at The Inside began ten years ago when he first walked in as an intern. “Honestly, I didn’t even want to intern at The Inside,” he admits. He continues, “The world of booth construction was completely unfamiliar to me. I had no idea what to expect, so I wasn’t sure if it would be the right fit. Luckily, I decided to go through with the internship, and I quickly realized that the role of workshop employee was exactly what I was looking for. Being involved in booth construction projects is amazing. Turning raw materials into stunning exhibition stands is truly special.”
“After my internship, I stayed on as a workshop employee.” Tycho’s workweek often starts with a new project. “The best part is when you get a complete booth to work on from start to finish on Monday—you can really immerse yourself in it for the entire week,” he explains. His tasks are diverse, ranging from building stands and furniture to conducting quality checks. He enthusiastically adds, “I also recently completed a course to become an internship supervisor. Now, I get to share my knowledge with interns every day, and I get so much energy from it. Teaching interns the craft from start to finish is incredibly rewarding!” Safety, technique, and creativity are at the core of his approach.
Tycho Salawan
Tycho’s coaching style is hands-on. He keeps interns close during their first weeks, allowing them to learn the basics. Once they gain confidence, he encourages them to work independently and think creatively. He values their input and motivates them to come up with ideas and critically assess processes. “I love it when they ask a lot of questions—it shows they’re really engaged,” he says. “Especially questions like, ‘Could we do this differently?’ That keeps me on my toes, challenges me to look at processes with fresh eyes, and think outside the box. When you’ve been doing this job for as long as I have, certain things start to feel automatic.”
“Interning at The Inside means experiencing a wide variety of tasks. You’re not just given the ‘easy’ jobs—we challenge you. We also genuinely invest in you. You can always turn to us for questions or support. We have an amazing, close-knit team of colleagues who are always willing to help.”
